LEARNING BY DESIGN Magazine announces the Spring 2022 Education Facilities Design Awards

Cleveland, Ohio –April 11, 2022– LEARNING BY DESIGN has published the annual Spring 2022 Education Facilities Design Awards Showcase.  The April 2022 edition features an assortment of exemplary PK-12 and post-secondary campus buildings. These recently activated projects include newly constructed entire schools and or renovated spaces that house early childhood, middle school, high school, specialized education, higher education college and university learning environments. In total fifty-eight entries were judged and scored based on six submission criteria: Innovation; Sustainability; Interior Design; Next Generation Learning; Planning and Functional Design; Community Needs.

A distinguished panel of five architects and education facility professionals reviewed and debated the merits of all submissions. Thirteen of the highest scoring submittals were bestowed top awards. These well-designed projects stood out for their novel design thinking, transparency, connectivity, safety, sustainability, great interiors, and sophistication. Four of those entries were awarded Grand Prize Awards, five runners-up were designated with Citation of Excellence Awards, and four bestowing unique designs or admiral undertakings were given Honorable Mention Awards.

The selected four “architecturally brilliant” Grand Prize Award winners combined all the elements that make a learning environment successful—

Natural light and access are granted for all spaces with an intentional understanding of student flow and learning opportunities.”

Northest Community Propel Academy

Orcutt | Winslow (Phoenix, AZ)
for the Cherokee Elementary School (Scottsdale, AZ)

“My favorite outdoor spaces project so far! Cherokee 2.0 highlights the link between history and science. The overall design is fun, and fosters play, curiosity and is dedicated to transparency, flexibility, and collaboration.”

Cherokee Elementary School

Stantec (Arlington, VA) for
the Sandy Spring Friends Upper School (Ashton-Sandy Spring, MD)

“The interior spaces were bright and inviting; the use of natural materials in a warm sophisticated way eliminated the need for bright whimsical colors that are often associated with academic spaces. The outdoor terrace was well scaled, providing important view connections to a beautiful campus.”
