LEARNING BY DESIGN Announces Education Design Awards: Spring 2020

(April 1, 2020) – The Spring 2020 Education Facilities Design Awards edition of LEARNING BY DESIGN magazine has been released featuring Sixty-Seven (67) recently completed educational facility design and construction projects from early childhood, middle school, high school, specialized education and higher education college and university environments. All published projects where judged, scored, and granted facility design awards based on six criteria of: Innovation; Sustainability; Interior Design; Next Generation Learning; Planning and Functional Design; Community Needs.

Sixteen of the best well-designed spaces were bestowed top awards. These projects have been enumerated for their novel design thinking, strong facility site and floor planning, and for successfully achieving the community’s or stakeholders’ operational, functional, and programmatic goals. Five top education facility design projects were awarded Grand Prize Awards, six others were designated with Citation of Excellence Awards, and five were given Honorable Mention Awards.

Lincoln High SchoolThe new connection between the to the outdoor courtyard and the commons is very strong and innovative. This project is exemplary in illustrating how a renovated building can improve the student and staff experiences, but also how it can enhance the neighborhood and alumni relationships.”

Maple School – “Excellent use of outdoor spaces for different functions. Really nice concepts that are evident in the design The interior spaces are very warm with pleasant colors and detailing. Support in developing a Professional Learning Community is apparent through the inclusion of a teacher planning area and living room for each grade level.”

Martin Luther King Branch Library -- This is a nicely executed project incorporating technology on the exterior and interior of a building with a relationship to both the residential and public neighborhoods. The graphics, use of different materials/finishes and colors are all pleasant, simulating and very exciting.

Stevens Creek Elementary School– “The design includes supportive informal learning spaces with flexible and various seating throughout the facility.  The colors and use of wood, windows, and light are effective in supporting student learning. Innovative learning spaces, connection to the outside and the details shaping those spaces are very well done.
