LEARNING BY DESIGN Fall 2022 Awards of Excellence

Cleveland, Ohio –October 7, 2022– LEARNING BY DESIGN has released its Fall 2022 Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence edition.  The October 2022 magazine features an assortment of one-hundred and two exemplary PK-12 and post-secondary campus buildings. These recently activated projects include newly constructed entire schools and or renovated spaces that house early childhood, middle school, high school, specialized education, higher education college and university learning environments. All submitted works were judged and scored based on six submission criteria: Innovation; Sustainability; Interior Design; Next Generation Learning; Planning and Functional Design; Community Needs.

A distinguished panel of seven architects and education facility professionals reviewed and debated the merits of all submissions. Eleven of the highest scoring submittals were bestowed top awards. These well-designed projects stood out for their novel design thinking, transparency, connectivity, safety, sustainability, great interiors, and sophistication. Five of those entries were awarded Grand Prize Awards, three runners-up were designated with Citation of Excellence Awards, and three bestowing unique designs or admiral undertakings were given Honorable Mention Awards.

Fall 2022 LBD Jury

The selected five “architecturally brilliant” Grand Prize Award winners combined all the elements that make a learning environment successful—

LPA Design Studios (Irvine, CA) for the eSTEM Academy at Roosevelt High School (Eastvale, CA) “This is a very exciting project. I like the way the protected courtyard connects the two buildings and offers students a comfortable place outdoors to study and hang out. Layout of the labs and various focused curriculum spaces that function together as an interconnected suite of spaces centered on a core resources/collaboration space is effective.”

LPA Design Studios (Irvine, CA) for the TIDE Academy (Menlo Park, CA) “This site and building feels very warm and welcoming. The yellow accents make the building glow - in a good way with a lot of natural elements complementing the very sculptural elements of the building and site. Effective organization of learning studios as a collection of adaptable learning environments connected and defined by shared and collaborative learning areas.”

NAC Architecture (Spokane, WA) for the Glover Middle School (Spokane, WA)“Appreciation for the elements that connect to nature, the airy and light feel of the spaces within and outside of the building, ease of access and ease of flow. Common and breakout spaces all have nice daylight and views, and the smaller breakout spaces flow seamlessly into the "river." This seems like an incredibly dynamic space for any student, but especially for a middle-schooler.”

Steinberg Hart (
Los Angeles, CA) for the Harvey Mudd College, Scott A. McGregor Computer Science Center (Claremont, CA) “The design is modern and colorful with great amenities to a college campus with the courtyards and social gathering spaces. Very nice sequence of light filled spaces and a well-balanced ecosystem of program and collaboration spaces. Love how the building engages students from across the campus.”

Tappe Architects (Boston, MA) for the Ivan G Smith Elementary School (Danvers, MA) – ‘This is a beautiful school and site location. The operable walls into Art and Music are very successful in achieving the curriculum focus. Keeping the encore classrooms together with the noise gives that area a fun vibe while being able to shut doors to the classrooms.”

The Three CITATION OF EXCELLENCE Awards, include:

  • Hildreth Elementary School (Harvard, MA) - Arrowstreet (Boston, MA)
  • Gardiner Middle School (Oregon City, OR) - BRIC Architecture (Portland, OR)
  • Mount Si High School Replacement (Snoqualmie, WA) – NAC Architecture (Seattle, WA)
